There are many types of vaping devices. Broadly speaking, there are two main classifications: mech mods and regulated mods. Regulated mods are much more popular than mech mods because of their safety vaping features such as adjustable wattage and voltage. Mech mods, on the other hand, could be more reliable and more popular among cloud chasers. So, what is a mechanical mod or a mech mod? Basically, a vaping device without a circuit that connects directly to the battery.

Mech mods are not suitable for vaping newbies as they require more advanced vaping skills.

What is a Mechanical Mod?

An RTA (rebuildable tank atomizer).

Mechanical mods are unregulated vaping devices. In other words, you cannot adjust its wattage or voltage, nor will the device detect the coil resistance. These vaping devices tend to have shorter battery lifespans as the batteries don’t have any shut-off system preventing the device from firing.

Pros and Cons of Mech mods

Regulated mods are more modern and advanced than mechanical mods. However, mech mods have some interesting advantages over circuit and regulated mods.

Pros of Mech Mods

Some of the advantages of mech mods are:

  • Reliability: mech mods don’t have circuits, which makes them more reliable because they have fewer malfunctions compared with regulated mods. From this standpoint, mech mods are less susceptible to experience problems as they don’t have any electronic circuits.
  • Hard as nails: mech mods are much more durable than regulated mods because they are just a battery and a framework.
  • Easier to repair: if you experience some technical problems, a mech mod is way easier to repair than a regulated mod. Usually, mech mods are very easy to repair and they could be repaired by someone with very basic technical skills.
  • Vaping experience: mech mods are used by many cloud chasers. They offer more possibilities to customize your vaping experience. For example, you can easily customize your coils with a mech mod. To sum up, mech mods are very popular among cloud chasers and sub-ohm enthusiasts.
  • Mech mods and RBA Atomizers: As they don’t have any shutoffs and they always fire, mech mods are considered essential for vaping rebuilder fans.

Cons of Mech Mods

Mech mods have also many disadvantages:

  • They are riskier: mechanical mods are more dangerous than regulated mods. They are recommended only to be used by experienced vapers because mech mods require some basic knowledge of electronics, amperage calculation, ohm’s law…Remember that mech mods don’t have a chip to calculate the wattage, voltage or amperage. In conclusion, unregulated mech mods could be extremely dangerous devices that can explode if not used in a proper way.
  • More expensive than regulated devices: mech mods are definitely more durable and reliable. However, a good mechanical mod is on average much more expensive than a regulated mod. For example, you can get a decent regulated mod for a reasonable price but, however, for the same price you won’t get a “reliable” mech mod. In addition, you will need to buy e-juices and batteries more frequently as mechanical mods tend to use more energy than regulated mods.
  • Not as powerful as you think: a regulated sub-ohm vaping device can reach up to more than 200W of power output. The truth is, you don’t need more than that. A higher wattage than that would only result in poor taste (burnt taste) and even in the emission of carcinogens such as formaldehyde.
Aspire Dynamo is a good example of a regulated sub-ohm vaping device.

  • Poor design: most of mechanical mods are just large tubes with very simple designs. On the other hand, regulated mods come in many cool designs.
  • Batteries: the batteries run out of power rather fast compared with regulated mods.
  • More Maintenance: mech mods require more cleaning and maintenance than regulated mods. If you don’t clean it often then you might experience malfunctions and bad taste.

Conclusion: What is a Mechanical Mod?

Mechanical mods have some advantages compared with regulated mods. For example, they are sturdier and easier to repair than regulated mods. Additionally, many cloud chasers prefer mech mods over regulated mods because they are great for vapor production.

On the other hand, mech mods are riskier, more expensive and they require more maintenance than regulated mods. Mech mods, for instance, are riskier because they don’t have the safety features that regulated mods have.

So, what is a mechanical mod? To sum up, we can say that it’s a vaping device more suitable for advanced vapers because it gives the vaper the freedom to customize it and to build his own coils.

Finally, let’s remind that a mechanical mod doesn’t mean a simpler vaping device. Mechanical mods aren’t recommended for unexperienced vapers because they require some basic knowledge about ohm’s law, amperage, batteries…

I strongly recommend all vapers to choose a regulated mod over a mech mod. Mainly, because regulated mods are much safer than mech mods. Moreover, mech mods tend to use more e-liquid and batteries than regulated mods.

Even if you are a sub-ohm enthusiast, you will find amazingly powerful regulated mods to produce big vaping clouds.
